Why study systems engineering :

One of the characteristics of today’s world is the importance of computing and the Internet in a person´s daily life. Thanks to systems engineering and computing progresses, there are new inventions every day as well gadgets that transform society and many people´s life styles.

A career in systems engineering is very important for a business, because every company needs new technologies, and to set up and to improve their information systems. Thus, these engineers’ role is currently very important and it will still be in the future.

All systems engineers are prepared to analyze research, plan, develop and manage all kinds of systems. To do that, they will have to put in practice all they know about science (mathematics, physics, etc.), information technology, telecommunications and general systems theory.

This means that systems engineers are able to decide, study and solve problems related to computer science. They are also prepared to develop new programs or software.

Therefore, all good systems engineers are prepared to do the following tasks:

– Identify, study and solve problems related to computer sciences.
– Analyze, design and produce new information systems.
– Plan, analyze, design, produce and evaluate computer and investment projects, as well as production systems.
– Create expert systems based on artificial intelligence, to solve problems that arise in a business.

Like other professionals, systems engineers can specialize in several fields. For instance: software development, information management, communication networks, robotics, and artificial intelligence, among others. Additionally, they can put in practice what they know in other sciences, such as economics.

Although in recent years the demand for systems engineers has increased, this does not mean that there is work for all these professionals, but only for the most competitive ones. In every country, more and more young people decide to study this career.

Engineers who graduate from the best universities and who have the most experience will have more chances to land a good job.

Systems engineers can perform in a company´s systems area as project managers, systems analysts, programmers, technical support managers, among others. In the computer department, they can have positions in computer center management, and solve operational problems. In the production department, they carry out operational research on sales and logistics; they can also create new software or information systems. They can also hold positions in important systems engineering companies, as systems project managers or consultants, in case they want to work in systems analysis and consultancy.

In short, people interested in this career must know that it is important to like and be talented for mathematics and other basic sciences. They will also have to read and research constantly, so interpretation and synthesis skills are necessary.
