Been education a process of knowledge delivery that takes place in a physical environment where both, the teacher and the students, interact face to face, in the early twentieth century there was a structural innovation and it is distance education, which does the same process but without the physical link we were used to.
It works using the postal service to send educational information and which, today, uses the Internet as a means of sending information in audio, video, images and text becoming, in synthesis, the democratization of knowledge at all imaginable levels.
For a long time the paradigm of education was limited to the pupil – teacher, so that variations in the level of education of the population were subject to the availability of educational infrastructure called for various forms, such as schools, colleges, high schools or centers education.
When a student moves forward at different educational levels, he or she wanted to keep on acquiring knowledge and seeking for better opportunities for his or her personal development, there was no choice in his or her home town or city, so he or she was pushed or forced to migrate to larger cities where there was a higher offer of institutes, colleges and universities that would let him or her to achieve the desired objectives and obtain a technical or college career.
The search for new educational options, made possible in the early twentieth century, the emergence of schools dedicated to education through pamphlets or guides loaded with educational content sent by correspondence, using the postal system whose job was just transporting documents and / or packages.
One of the most famous schools was in Sweden and it was known as Hermods School, dedicated to the teaching of languages and trade and, when it was at its highest point, it even had around 150 000 students.
During the mid – twentieth century, the constant struggle between the traditional education (at school) and distance education, ended up making the latter into a non – formal educational method, design that was eradicated just in the late seventies when, at the request of English Parliament, the project called Open University finally consolidated, becoming the top – level educational innovation, allowing it to prop up distance education which was replicated in many countries with the consequent acceptance of its students.
The emergence of a new context dominated by the WWW has allowed the possibility of linking higher education to university degrees, postgraduate, master’s and doctoral degrees in Europe, making it possibly to access it today is within reach of the hand in real time from any citizen of the world who can access it from his or her home to a huge range of universities located in places outside their home countries, while working, without detracting from his or her family and really attractive costs both for those who supply and demand.
This possibility is due to the presence of devices and technological innovations such as multimedia which is nothing else than the combined presentation of text, images, sound and video that has allowed educational progress without the need to migrate, but it is just enough to have a computer and Internet connection, thus appearing in a form of distance education called e – learning, the postal service is no longer needed, but e – mail and virtual classrooms to deliver and return tasks, work and exams.
The success of distance education depends on the student and his or her perseverance, as well as from his or her self discipline and perseverance.
The main advantage is its flexible hours, allowing it to maintain family and labor ties. The main disadvantage of this type of education is the loss of bonding – physics faculty – student.
